The Polecats: A Journey of All Night Long and Beyond
Formation and Early Years (1977-1980)
In the midst of the burgeoning punk scene in London, a group of young musicians emerged with a unique blend of rockabilly, punk, and pop sensibilities. Led by the charismatic guitarist Tim Polecat, The Polecats were born. Their early lineup featured Steve Hewitt on vocals, Phil Bloomberg on bass, and Martin "Boz" Boorer on drums.
Despite facing challenges in securing record label support, The Polecats remained steadfast in developing their sound. They played countless gigs in small clubs, honing their exhilarating live performances and building a loyal following.
Breakthrough and Commercial Success (1980-1984)
In 1980, The Polecats' fortunes changed when they signed with Polydor Records. Their debut single, "Rockabilly Guy," failed to make a significant impact, but their follow-up, "Make a Circuit with Me," became a Top 10 hit in the UK.
The release of their debut album, "Polecats," in 1981, further cemented their status as a rising star. The album spawned their signature hit, "All Night Long," which reached the Top 5 in the UK and became an enduring anthem of the rockabilly revival movement.
Controversies and Lineup Changes (1984-1988)
The Polecats' commercial success was accompanied by some setbacks. In 1984, founding member Steve Hewitt departed the band, replaced by Brian Gregg. This lineup change coincided with a period of controversy, as The Polecats' music was accused of being overly commercial and lacking authenticity.
Despite these challenges, The Polecats continued to release albums, including "One Man Gang" (1985) and "Make or Break" (1986). They also embarked on extensive touring, establishing a reputation as a dynamic and entertaining live act.
Later Years and Legacy (1988-Present)
The Polecats' original lineup reunited in 1988 for a brief tour and a new album, "Blast from the Past." However, further lineup changes ensued in the years that followed, with only Tim Polecat remaining a constant member.
Despite the challenges of maintaining a stable lineup, The Polecats have continued to perform and release music throughout the decades. They have gained a cult following among fans of rockabilly and punk, and their signature song, "All Night Long," remains a beloved classic.
